Episode Fifty-Two: Sonja Bennett
Sonja Bennett is an award-winning actress and screenwriter with a knack for portraying and creating fierce, flawed, and fantastically funny characters. As an actress, Sonja jumps back and forth between indie fare and network shows. She lit up the screen as Detective Samantha Waters in Cold Squad, as Daisy in Godiva’s, as Karla in Ghost Wars, and as Mia in YPF – and in 2018, she won the Leo Award for Best Supporting Performance by a Female in a Motion Picture for Kayak to Klemtu. Sonja’s screenwriting work includes the feature film Preggoland, about a 30-something who fakes a pregnancy in order to be accepted by her peer group, and the digital series Sunnyhearts Community Centre, about a dysfunctional but relatable community centre. She’s also written and story edited on Ghost Wars, Kim’s Convenience, and Letterkenny. In this funny and thoughtful interview, Sonja discusses juggling her acting and screenwriting hats, failing at tap dancing, and that horrific Ghost Wars birthing scene.
