Mayumi Yoshida is as an actress, a writer, a director, a producer, and a changemaker determined to create opportunities for emerging storytellers of colour. She describes herself as living in the space between Asian and North American cultures: relating to and participating in both; keenly aware of the gulfs and overlaps between them. It’s an awareness that has fed her screen work, beginning with Akashi, the short film she wrote, directed, and starred in about a young woman who returns to Japan for her grandmother’s funeral and confronts some inconvenient personal truths. Mayumi is currently working on the feature film version of Akashi. She portrays the Crown Princess of Japan on Amazon’s beloved dystopian drama The Man in the High Castle, and as co-creative director of the Mighty Asian Moviemaking Marathon, she’s encouraged Asian Canadian filmmakers to value their own stories. In this introspective interview, Mayumi recounts the childhood experiences that shaped her storytelling sensibilities, reflects on her journey as an actress and filmmaker of colour, and dishes on the fourth and final season of The Man in the High Castle (including which High Castle actor is her real-life sensei).
