Episode Forty-Nine: Robert Cooper
Robert Cooper is a writer, producer, and director who served as showrunner for a little franchise that changed the face of the BC television industry: the record-breaking Stargate television franchise for MGM. Robert co-created Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe and served as executive producer, writer, and director of multiple episodes of all three series as well as two direct-to-video movies. In 2018, Robert created, wrote, and directed episodes of CBC’s Unspeakable, a remarkable miniseries that told the story of Canada’s tainted blood scandal and won the 2018 Leo Award for best dramatic series. Robert served as showrunner of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency for BBC America, Netflix and AMC Studios. In 2009, he was presented with an outstanding achievement award for his contributions to the British Columbia television industry – and more recently, he was announced as showrunner for the Pacific Screenwriting Program’s 2020 Scripted Series Lab. In this wide-ranging episode, Robert talks about the hows and whats of showrunning, his time in the Stargate universe, and the joys of creating (and the challenges of marketing) Unspeakable.
